Frequently Asked Questions

So ... masks, huh?

I love masks. I've always had a fascination with making them but didn't start to get serious about it until the last five years or so. All the masks I make can be worn as well as displayed, so the most important characteristics are comfort (durable ties, no metal or wire or rough surfaces rubbing against the face), ability to see and breathability. A piece of wall art with no eye holes, air holes or way to wear it on your face can't correctly be called a mask.

Why 365 masks?

It seemed like a good idea. I chose a year-long project partly because I wanted to force myself to create something every day, and partly because it has an end, so I can measure my progress and not just quit if I get bored or frustrated. My true inspiration for it, of course, came from Skull A Day.

Can you display my masks on your site?

If you have a website where you show the masks you make then I will by all means add your link on 365 Masks! I'm very excited about getting to know fellow mask makers and sharing links. I don't have a section on this site for showing other people's masks yet, but might in the future.

So, are you selling these masks or what?

Not currently. After the project is finished I'd like to have a show or party or something where I display them all together and celebrate successfully completing it. I haven't made plans beyond that, so I'm definitely going to have to come up with a way to safely store hundreds of masks.

Some of these look like something my kindergartner would make. What's up with that?

One of my goals with 365 Masks is to become less self-critical and more adventurous with regards to the work I produce and the media I use. Many of these masks will be my first attempt at using a particular technique or tool, and even if the finished result isn't a perfect example, I'm going to share it with you. More than anything else I want to have fun with this, and I'm hoping that those following along will see my masks in that spirit as well.

What if you miss a day?

I certainly don't intend to, but sometimes life happens. If I for whatever reason simply can't post a mask on a certain day, I'll post a mask for that day ASAP. The real point is to have 365 masks by the end of the year, not win a prize for posting every day before midnight.

More questions will be added over time!

Good FAQ, Kelts. I learned some things from it and being your mom I probably should have know it all already. I'm looking forward to seeing today's mask!

Good Luck! Very cool. I found your project via SkullaDay. Love the filagree and metal embossed masks so far! I'm a "crafter" at heart and look forward to eventually "poaching" some of your ideas onto my own craft table. Truly inspiring!
