Mask #94: Big Ol' Spider Mask

(Click the pictures to see larger versions.)

I constructed this spider pretty much exactly the same way I did for mask #4, just on a larger scale. I used tinfoil for the shape of the body, toothpicks for the legs, and hot glue to hold it all together and provide the knobbly, lumpy exterior. I set the body on the mask form where I wanted it to be centered and built the legs on that way so that I could be sure they were placed correctly around the face. Then I painted it black all over, and the only other embellishment I'll add is a coat of acrylic medium to give it some creepy gloss. I'm planning to attach the ties under the abdomen, and am considering using that 'invisible' strap stuff. The spider is only sitting on the mask form to demonstrate where it sits on the face: the form isn't part of the mask.

I had some qualms while I was building this as to whether it really is technically a mask, but I decided that yes, it is. If you think it isn't I'd love to know why! Making it was fun because, as I've said before, I have a major fear of spiders but for some reason love sculpting them.

Um...Jerome have you checked if Xanthia (sp?) is still in her box? Yikes!

Fun! I really like when you move away from more standard forms. I would love, love to see this on a model!
