Update: June 24, 2008

Hello, mask enthusiasts and accidental visitors. This is a note to let you know that the 365 Masks project is not over yet! There's been an unplanned hiatus, yes, but things will resume in short order. I'm in a show this week and after that craziness is finished I'll be focusing on 365 Masks for the remainder of the year! So check back in next week and there'll be new masks for you to see.

Mask #116: The 'End of a Skully Era' Mask

(Click the pictures to see larger versions.)

Will you be shocked to learn that the base for this mask was trusty old tinfoil and masking tape? Probably not! I covered a mask form with tinfoil, then covered that with masking tape. After I had all the layers finished I drew on the skull shape, cut it out and sealed all the edges with more masking tape. To give it a black finish I pasted on black tissue paper with a white glue and water mix. After that dried I used white dimensional paint to decorate it. The ties will be either black or white, or possibly both!

This mask is created especially to honour the end of Noah Scalin's Skull-A-Day project. It officially ended yesterday, which is when I intended to post this mask, but a sudden major migraine knocked me down when I was halfway through so I had to finish it today.

Noah's project was definitely the main inspiration for me to begin my own art project. If you haven't done it before, I urge you to go and look at Noah's entire project starting with the first skull. It's an amazing, incredible accomplishment and really just very unbelievable when you sit down to look at the whole thing. Not only did he keep things fresh and imaginative every single day, he did so with massive talent. I can't think of a single skull that didn't impress me in some way. Noah has also been extremely supportive and encouraging to me regarding 365 Masks and even though I'm apparently a much flakier artist than he is, he always has a kind word for me.

Be sure to continue to keep up with Skull-A-Day, however, as it enters its second phase. Noah will be posting skull submissions daily from fans and readers, and I'm very excited to see the continuing skully goodness. Thanks for bringing us Skull-A-Day, Noah, and congratulations on such an accomplishment!
